I discovered the Selby Revolver in the junk cabinet of a small camera store near Shinjuku Station. Its four lenses immediately caught my eye, so I picked it up for about 3000¥ ($20). Having no experience with film, I simply chose the cheapest roll available—some 100 ISO FUJICOLOR.
The camera itself is quite basic, with a fixed shutter speed and no focus adjustment. Its rotating shutter captures four exposures in just 0.66 seconds on a single frame of film.
Throughout my trip, I experimented with framing shots to emphasize movement across the four exposures. Once I got back, I got the film developed and scanned, then wrote a simple Python script to transform the scans into GIFs.
I’m really happy with the results. The combination of film’s nostalgic aesthetic and the dynamic energy of Japan created something truly unique.
Here's the selby2gif Python script, if you try it out yourself please share your pictures!
